Satellite verification: checking that the plant your counterparty describes actually exists

A supplier sends photographs of its factory and a specification claiming five thousand square metres of production space. Everything in the file is a document, and documents can be produced. The site itself cannot.

Most due diligence works on paper: registers, filings, court records, the digital footprint. All of it can be forged, staged or presented selectively. Geospatial intelligence — GEOSINT — asks a different kind of question, one answered by the surface of the earth rather than by a document. This article explains what it verifies, how the imagery layers differ, why shadows are hard to fake, and where the method matters most.

What satellite imagery actually verifies

GEOSINT does not replace document work. It settles a narrow set of questions that documents answer badly:

  • Whether a claimed production site, warehouse or office physically exists at the stated address.
  • Whether the scale of operations matches the claim — footprint of buildings, vehicle movement, activity on site.
  • How the site changed over time, particularly across a date that matters: before and after a sale, a designation, a restructuring.
  • Whether equipment or stock said to be present is visible where it should be.
  • What is happening at a site in a conflict zone or on occupied territory, where no one is going to visit.

The free layer answers more than people expect. A five-thousand-square-metre production hall is unmissable at ten metres per pixel. If the claim is a large industrial facility, the open archive settles it at no cost.

Shadow geolocation, and why it is difficult to defeat

The length and direction of a shadow are fixed by three things: latitude, date and time of day. That relationship is astronomical, and a photograph either satisfies it or does not.

Applied to a counterparty's own photographs, it becomes a verification tool. If a supplier says the image shows their plant in Poland in March, the shadows in that image have to be consistent with Polish latitude in March. Where they are not, the picture was taken somewhere else, at another time of year, or both. In practice this is one of the few checks a counterparty cannot argue with, because it does not depend on anyone's account of events.

A worked case

The following is an anonymised case. The details are changed; the sequence and the logic are exactly as they ran.

A client was negotiating with a furniture supplier presented as Polish. The supplier provided photographs of its own plant and claimed five thousand square metres of production capacity. The order was around 180,000 euro, with fifty percent payable in advance.

The resulting Argus Score was 18 out of 100. The client did not send the advance payment. The counterparty was a phantom supplier with no production of its own — an outcome that four hours of imagery work established and that no amount of document review would have reached, because every document supplied was internally consistent.

Where the method matters most

Imagery is jurisdiction-neutral, and that is its strategic value. It works identically whether the target sits in a country with an open corporate register or one where ownership, courts and property records are closed to outsiders. In the Gulf and in Turkiye, where third parties cannot search property records by owner, physical verification is sometimes the only independent confirmation available at all.

The same applies in Ukraine for a narrower reason. Since a government decision that took effect on 27 December 2025, electronic extracts from the property register conceal the exact address and cadastral number of real estate held by legal entities, showing only the region. The restriction applies to the electronic output: a paper extract obtained through a registrar, or access held by an enforcement officer or an attorney, still returns the full record. Where that route is unavailable or too slow, imagery against a known site remains open.

For asset work the two combine well. Registry data says what is owned on paper; imagery says what is standing on the ground and whether it is operating.

What it does not do

Imagery shows structures and activity. It does not show ownership, encumbrances, lease terms or who is actually using a building. A hall that plainly exists may belong to somebody else entirely, or be mortgaged, or be leased to a third party. It also has practical limits: persistent cloud cover, revisit gaps in the free layer, and the fact that anything indoors is invisible.

Treated as one layer among several, it is decisive. Treated as a standalone answer, it overreaches.

Bottom line

The strength of imagery is that it is not a document. It cannot be reissued, backdated or presented selectively, and shadow geometry cannot be negotiated. Where a counterparty's claim rests on a physical asset — a plant, a warehouse, a fleet, a stockpile — the cheapest way to test that claim is usually to look at it from above before the money moves.

For large structures, yes. Open archives from public space agencies run at roughly ten metres per pixel and refresh every few days, which is more than enough to establish whether a five-thousand-square-metre hall exists or whether a site has changed. Commercial imagery at around half a metre per pixel is needed to see individual vehicles or activity on a specific day.
When is imagery worth commissioning?
When the value of the deal turns on a physical asset and the counterparty is unfamiliar, when an advance payment is requested, when the registered address and the operating address differ without explanation, or when ownership and property records in that jurisdiction are closed to third parties and no other independent confirmation exists.
